Emir's Family
Emir lives with his parents and his grandmother in Ankara. His mother, Selin, is a pharmacist. She runs a small pharmacy near a big hospital. She serves customers and gives them advice about their medicine. Her pharmacy opens at half past eight, so she leaves home early every morning.
Emir's father, Murat, is an architect at an architectural firm. He designs schools and libraries. He usually works in the office, but on Thursdays, he visits building sites to check the work. At the moment, his team is designing a new upper secondary school with a large courtyard and a modern food technology room.
Emir's cousin, Deniz, is a content creator. She works remotely from home and publishes videos about healthy cooking. She also promotes products for some small food brands. Emir often helps her with filming at weekends because he loves cameras.

Two Students, Two Schools
Kerem is a Year 10 student at a sports high school in Antalya. His school has an indoor gym, a swimming pool and two tennis courts. Every morning, students have regular lessons such as maths, literature and English. In the afternoons, they train for three hours. Kerem is a gymnast, so he practises gymnastics in the indoor gym every day. He sometimes feels stressed before competitions, so he talks to the school counsellor.
Ayşe goes to a vocational and technical high school in Gaziantep. She wants to become a chef. Her school has a large food technology room and a small restaurant. Students serve meals to teachers and visitors in the restaurant. Twice a week, Ayşe cooks traditional dishes with her classmates. Right now, they are preparing a special lunch menu for the Republic Day celebration at school. After lessons, Ayşe joins the volunteering club. Every Friday, the members cook soup for elderly people in the neighbourhood.

My Exchange Diary: A Week in Ankara

Back home in Bergen, I go to an upper secondary school near my house. Our lessons usually start at half past eight, and we rarely have exams in the first weeks of the term. That's why I don't often feel stressed at school.
This week, everything is different! I am staying with the Yılmaz family, and I am attending an upper secondary school in Ankara as an exchange student. Most lessons are in Turkish, so I sometimes feel anxious because I don't understand everything. Luckily, my host brother, Emir, is helping me a lot. He explains the difficult parts in English and never laughs at my mistakes.
The school has great facilities, such as a big courtyard, a food technology room and two basketball courts. After lessons, students take part in extracurricular activities. At home, I play chess with my grandfather every weekend, so I am joining the chess club here this week.
Right now, the whole school is preparing for Republic Day on 29 October. The literature club is rehearsing poems, and the music club is practising folk songs. Emir is a perfectionist, so he is practising his speech again and again. Every year at the Republic Day ceremony, students and teachers sing the National Anthem together, and then the celebration programme starts.
I think I am learning more than a language here. I am learning how a nation remembers its history with pride and joy.
